Do I need to make an appointment to see this material?
The Reading Room is open to all and the book collections are browseable. If you want to browse or use our book collections then you do not need to make an appointment. We are currently open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday (with a later opening until 7pm on Thursdays and from 12noon until 4pm on Saturdays during term time). Do I need a letter of introduction to see this material?
No. Our collections are open to all for study, research and enjoyment.

What do I make a note of to see items on the collection?
Please make a note of either the ‘RefNo’ or the ‘ObjectNumber’ on the record of the item you would like to see. This allows us to identify and retrieve the items for you.

Is there a maximum number of items I can see at once?
This varies within the collections. We will guide you on this when you contact us.

Are some items not available to see?
On rare occasions we have to withhold items. We will guide you on this when you contact us.

Can I take the books/items out?
No. Our collections are for reference only.

Do your collections include the archives of MMU as an institution?
Some, but not all. We hold pre-1970 archival material relating to the Manchester School of Art and its successor institutions, including the Art and Design departments of Manchester Polytechnic.

Do I need to be a student or a member of staff at MMU to see the collections?
No. MMU Special Collections is an Accredited Museum and our collections are open to all.

Can I bring a group to see or use the collections?

What standards do you employ for cataloguing the material in the collections?
The records in this catalogue comply to ISAD(G) 2000 and SPECTRUM standards depending upon the nature of the material. We use the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus to maintain a standard vocabulary across the collections.
